SMITH, Carole (Née Jones) – At the young age of 72, lost her 25+ year battle with COPD, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Kirkland and District Hospital on March 16, 2018. Carole was born on August 29th, 1945 in Montréal, Québec, to James and Emma Jones. She grew up on and loved the Island, but due to some political pressure to relocate, settled in Newmarket with her young family in the late 70’s. Whether hockey, soccer, or ringette she was “The Sports Mom Extraordinaire.” Later for 25+ years, she held various positions on the board of directors of the Co-Op where she lived. Her doors were always open, if you were stuck and needed a place to stay, for a day, a week, or a month or more, she never turned anyone away. Following a change in health, it was no longer safe for her to live alone, so she packed up the essentials and moved to Kirkland Lake in the summer of 2016 to Teck Pioneer Residence.
Carole was predeceased by her husband Lloyd Smith, and her sisters, Janet Catel and Margaret Wolf. She is survived by her baby brother Jim Jones (Lucille), her children, Wendy (Shane) Boudreault and Chris (Marika) Gilligan; her first husband Norman Gilligan; her grandchildren Christy, Rebecca, Shawn, and Sarah; her great-grandsons William and James as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family truly appreciates the exceptional care, attention and kindness the ICU, fourth floor and Palliative Care Unit staff provided to Carole and her family during this time. Many thanks are also extended to the staff at Teck Pioneer Residence, Volunteers, friends and neighbours for their help and friendship. We also acknowledge the assistance provided to Carole and her family by the French Family Funeral Home. AquaCremation has taken place and it is Carole’s wish to be laid to rest in Kingston, Ontario with her parents. A celebration of Carole’s life will take place in Kingston at a later date.

It is very painful to lose someone as wise, good and caring as Carole whom I had known for over 50 years, I was blessed to have known her. Deepest sympathy to Wendy, Chris and Jim and their families, also to Wayne and Edgar and their families. There are fond memories of times we shared with her, that we all can revisit and cherish to keep her in our thoughts and in our hearts for as long as we live.
