Mr. George Oscar Ylijoki passed away Monday evening, January 27, 2020 at the age of 85.
George was born November 15, 1934 in South Porcupine, the last surviving son of the late Oscar and Esther Ylijoki. Predeceased by his sister, Anne Parkman, three brothers, Eino, Baby Oscar and Raymond, as well as his beloved great nephew, Frank Swanson.
George moved to the Tarzwell area with his family in 1945, where he quickly adapted to life in the country. He loved cross-country skiing and was formally recognized for top placement finishes in numerous biathlons over the years.
During the early parts of his life, George predominantly worked in lumber camps and the Dome Mine. In later years, he went back to school to upgrade, where he successfully achieved a certificate in General Carpentry. George worked in his trade until his retirement. Forever tinkering, or building something, he was always busy.
Fiercely proud of his Finnish heritage, he was grateful to have traveled to Finland twice in his lifetime, where he trod in the footsteps of his parents, making lifelong friends of many distant relatives.
George maintained strong independence living on his own, having never married, nor any children of his own. Known for being very social, he found great enjoyment going to town to meet up with friends. Sharing stories over coffee was a treasured pastime.
Like his father before him, George was a great lover of music and taught himself to play the accordion by ear. Having possessed one all the years of his life, George could be always found entertaining family and friends, at many a gathering, to the tune of a polka from the old country.
At 85 years old, he still cut, split and piled his own firewood. In summer, he delighted in picking and selling wild blueberries. Sometimes picking as many as 85 baskets in a single season, he carefully guarded his little black book containing the names of buyers he never wanted to share…
George is survived by his nieces Patricia Parkman-McLeod & husband Bruce, Susan Parkman-Swanson & husband Michael; great nephew, Benjamin Swanson & spouse Amanda, great niece Jessica Parkman & spouse Kyle; great-great nephew, Odin Swanson (George was so proud to be called Tuhva by him); sister-in-law, Esther Ylijoki (late Raymond Ylijoki) and nephew, John. He leaves behind many other family members and countless friends.
George will be greatly missed, everyday. Lepää Rauhassa.
Burial to be held at the Round Lake Cemetery at a later date.
